Brickwork....

No, not a Hobbit hole, but one of Wellington's relatively unknown treasures - a house and garden, tucked away on a hilltop behind the Wellington Zoo, overlooking Lyall Bay and the airport.  The former home of Plunket founder Truby King and his wife, this is a spectacular, (and spectacularly bizarre) spot, incorporating an elaborate brickwork garden (and mausoleum - both are in fact buried here).  Begun by King in the 1920s, the grounds are now open to the public from dawn to dusk, and are well worth a visit - if merely for the outstanding view.  The grounds are extensive, and the effect of the brick paths and arches incredibly striking.  You can find it at 21 Manchester Terrace.  The secret is out!
